More Coney Island stuff

Coney Island 2003: The Disposable Project pt. 2

I finally put up the pictures of Coney Island I took last spring. I love visiting, and I love taking along a disposable camera just to see what I can do with it. This, then, is the journal of that trip.

Beautiful pictures, Spatch. I love the quiet melancholy that you get from amusement parks out of season.

The one taken from inside the Wonder Wheel is great, this crazy green web covering the view of the park. And the one of the dragon chariot.

There's one of those worm-in-apple kiddie coasters in Brighton. It's great, if you stand out on the pier and look back at the town, you see all these big white Georgian houses on the seafront (now so costly that nobody can afford an apartment carved out of half a floor of one, let alone a whole house) and the nudist beach (that I have never been to because, it being Brighton, I get the feeling that women are not terribly welcome) and the rather grim marina, and in the middle of it all is this huge red fibreglass apple by the sea. I love it.

Of course, it being Brighton, whenever you see a poignant melancholy view of something beautiful and faded, you can bet your worldly possessions* that some art student's already used that photo in his second-year project.


*(mine being £3500, a laptop with battery issues, and an ex-engagement ring)

Aww man. The memories. Riding Cyclone until I went practically broke, checking out that chick from the dating show's ass when the wind blew her skirt up, disregarding signage and walking right up to the parachute tower, the demons in my head saying "RIDE THE KIDDIE COASTER, ALAN. DO IT", and the B&B giving us rings (I think). Good times.

Did you take any pictures at SFGAdv or LI Adventureland either?

I also redesigned the first Disposable Project at Coney Island, pictures taken four years ago (shit, it's been that long.) Ghostly structures, now demolished, against a snowy backdrop. Melancholy and bleak just for you.

The only picture near Great Adventure was the "Outdoor World" or whatever festival of concrete fountains that was right off the highway exit. No pix of LI Adventureland, unfortunately.

Oh, and one of some dude driving a car with a Krispy Kreme hat on, but I didn't think he'd want that shared as part of the photo-essay.
