It's been going on for over 20 years now. I remember running into it when I was in 6th grade and our class spent a week on an island in Boston Harbor and we had one day off on the "mainland."
As far as I can see it's an event that has only winners. The Jimmy Fund is happy because they get money. The organizers are happy because I wager they make some bank on it, too. The ice cream people are happy because they get to advertise their wares to an enthusiastic crowd of ice cream lovers (and seriously, nobody loves ice cream more than New Englanders.) And us Bostonians are happy because, hell, we get to eat ice cream!
