I'm a bad person today

After two pigeons took a divebomb run off the roof of the opposite building and smacked into our 5th story windows this morning, several people took it upon themselves to put pieces of paper up as a precaution against further diving and smacking. I was one of those people, but my Post-It note has a target drawn on it and the words PIGEONS! AIM HERE! WIN A PRIZE!

Not related at all to being a bad person: The Brattle has devoted September to Stanley Kubrick, and will screen every single one of his feature films, from The Killing to Eyes Wide Shut. I know which ones I'll gladly miss, but a Dr. Strangelove/Lolita double feature seems too fascinating to pass up. Paths of Glory and Full Metal Jacket make up the GOLLY WAR SURE IS REALLY BAD double feature, probably way too heavy to fathom in one sitting (I can't make it through Paths of Glory in one sitting) but I'd love the chance to see Barry Lyndon on ze beeg screen.

Cut-outs don't work anyway. The Boy works at The Government's Major Nature and Environment Quango and its HQs are all glass, all surrounded by trees, and covered in cut-outs of hawks etc. It's also surrounded by a small heap of dead birds. Their absolute favourite place to get broken necks is the wing that contained the bird research group, naturally.

They get very excited about the birds though. work stopped for about forty-five minutes last week when they spied an incredibly rare spotted flycatcher in the car park.
THis week the phones went unanswered for a sparrow hawk.
Then it ate the spotted fly catcher.
True story.

i was about to write a whole thing about how much i hate barry lyndon, til i realized that i was thinking about tom jones. (i really hate that movie, ugh. i hate it more for it's story than for the acting itself though.) we watched both of them in the same class, and i got them confused. well, admittedly we didn't watch all of barry lyndon. it was pretty cool that he filmed using only candlelight, and got all the costume details right and everything... but i wasn't particularly drawn in.

I loved Barry Lyndon. Then again, I am a sucker for costume dramas. Not saying that it isn't a slow-paced film, though. And if you hate baroque music it totally isn't for you.

I should really see it again, though. I can't figure out why I started out liking the title character and ended up hating his guts by the end.... (Sorry it that was a spoiler....)

And it's beautifully filmed.

I can do without seeing Eyes Wide Shut or Full Metal Jacket again. But I'd love to see Dr. Strangelove or Clockwork Orange big screen. I think that would be close to overwhelming for the senses.

I once watched Bringing out the dead and then Amelie for a class. WAY too much for me. Incidentally, the class was Eros & Thanatos (Love and Death). Hence those choices. Made for a very intense afternoon.
