I used to be a 911 operator. The cops aren't performing any sort of look-up or trace. 911 isn't a regular phone line. It's called something like a trunk (I forget the exact term), and as soon as a call comes in it comes with information about location etc. Supposedly the information is kept in a separate database from the one that allow reverse look-up, one only available to law enforcement. (If you call from a cell phone, the information that shows up on the dispatcher's screen will be an approximate location based on the cell towers.)
Anyway, yikes! I don't think I would have been as composed as you guys under the circumstances. I'd probably have been making an ass of myself screaming all sorts of things about getting the hell out of my house, warrants, and probable cause. I'm glad you guys are alright, aside from your frayed nerves.
