Here are some other things that can make your life nicer:
I like fingerless bicycling gloves because I get blisters otherwise, although this is a personal issue; they also look cool as shit, and I sometimes wear them while typing in cold rooms so my fingers don't freeze up. Buy these at Target.
Also, if you do plan to commute, you should carry a small hand pump in your bag; this is another Target purchase.
Legally to cover your ass you may need lights -- check the laws of your state.
If your commute is long, I also recommend a water bottle clip for your bike, if it will fit one.
If your city is particularly unfriendly to bicyclists or you plan to do a lot of bike riding, you may wish to affix glowing stickers or tape to your bike and helmet, so people can't try to run you off the road and then while passing you roll down their windows and yell "I can't see you" in spite of your flashing lights and white shirt.
