Had some exploration today. joyeous and I went down to Fall River and explored two very intriguing sites.



First we bade farewell to a roller coaster that's soon to give way to a condominium development.



All the tromping through the underbrush was very tiring, so we looked for a place to take a nap. These two spots were... less than optimal.

The Lincoln Park Comet! I think that was it's name. I definitely rode it when I was a kid. I can't believe the ruins are still there!

The roller coaster shots are beautiful and wild and haunting. Even with the graffiti. Maybe because of the graffiti.

Someone in the back of my head won't stop shaking her head and moaning, "Spatch, what a setting!" Fortunately, the two of you seem to get along all right, so I won't tell you to run for the hills.

Jesus H. Christ, someone needs to shoot a movie on the Lincoln Park grounds, stat! The script practically writes itself with that locale. Absolutely gorgeous.

Was it difficult to get into the grounds?

Not really, no. There's a fence around the property but there's enough holes and access points around that you could get in even from the sidewalk on Route 6. We met two separate groups of people inside, besides the surveying team who were supposed to be there. One group was a family from Denmark who were just passing through, saw the ruins and decided to investigate, and one group was a bunch of locals who'd come to scavenge what they could now that the news is out that the site's soon going to go condo. In the 8 years since I last went to the park, most of the good stuff is gone (signage, artifacts, bench seats from the coaster train) but they found some canvas that I guess could be put to good use. We talked about the park, swapped stories, and tried to remember what attractions were where. It was kind of weird, really, since you expect solitude in those places.

I love the Wildcat too (yay Herb Schmeck!) but if you haven't been to Lake Compounce since they built Boulder Dash, you really oughta go some time. The ride takes a 150-foot drop off the side of the mountain. It's just a terrific ride.

When did it close? Did it really become a casino, or is Google confusing me?

The Lincoln Park dog track and casino on the MA/RI border is in no way related to the amusement park, which was open from 1894 to 1987. You may want to look at this fan site at lpcomet.com if you're intrigued and Google isn't doing much to help.

Thanks. Now I'm much less confused. While we're on this subject, what's happening with Whalom?

Well, at this point everything at the Whalom site has been razed. The ballroom had been torched by arson and in late 2006 the bulldozers came for the other park structures, including the Flyer Comet. From what I can tell, a developer has plans to build a gated community called Emerald Place on the site, but at least one or two grassroots organizations have popped up trying to drum up community support to put a "new" Whalom Park on the site. Considering the "Save Whalom Park" movement was stymied by bureaucracy and developer greed and whatnot, I'm not holding out too much hope for this new idea, unless there's some serious capital and backing behind it.
