GOOD IDEA: Placing a traffic safety decal on the road in a school zone to warn motorists to slow down.

BAD IDEA: Placing a traffic safety decal on the road in a school zone to warn motorists to slow down that looks like a 3D kid in the middle of the street.

THE END.

Anamorphic projection is pretty neat. But talk about crying wolf there.

I'd like to see some of those on some certain streets in Boston. Like a few residential streets near work, those triangular rotaries near Uphams Corner, the Lamartine Speedway...

Won't that cause more accidents as drivers suddenly slam on their brakes and get rear-ended?

So true. Cutesy ideas and real traffic do not mix.

Sure, but then it's the fault of the guy behind you. Never mind that you were doing 40mph in a school zone.

Personally I think *enforcement* is the way to go. Nothing gets people to slow down like a few $150 tickets the first week of school. Word gets out, people.

So what happens when drivers get used to these things and then blithely drive over an actual kid?

Well, it's always best to steer when possible to avoid obstacles, rather than brake. Also, a driver shouldn't be following too closely -- they should always have enough room to brake or steer should the person in front of them suddenly stop. Not to say that anyone knows this.

Now all you need is Tom Bodett to narrate and you're set!

That was my thought: "Goody: we're training people to run over kids".

Morons.

When I first heard of this, I thought "$0.99 of spray paint will totally fix this $500 screwup.".
