I remember that performance by The Roches. That's when I became a fan.

My goodness, I was young. I was not allowed to watch TV that late. Nevertheless, on rare occasions, my parents would go to the Symphony in Big Bad New York on a Saturday, and leave me home alone.

We had TVs all over the house - but not in my bedroom. I planned this caper carefully, and it became a regular thing. The TV that was closest to my bedroom, whose windows did not shine on the street my parents would take to the driveway, was in the guest room next to my bedroom.

That TV was SECURE. The antennae were always shortened and tucked away, the TV wasn't even plugged in, and the cord was securely stowed in the back. The room was carpeted - you could see foot prints in it. But I had a plan.

I would watch in the dark. I would place blankets on the floor in front of the TV. When my father hit the button for the automatic garage door, it would set up a terrible racket: but I would instantly turn the TV off.

In the dark, I'd lower the antennae (careful: don't bend it) and wrap the cord around the back of the TV. I couldn't roll the unit to reach: the wheels would leave marks on the rug. I had to LIFT the TV, cart and all, wrap the cord, lift the TV and place the wheels BACK in the carpet dents, very precisely, in the dark. Drag the blankets to remove the footprints in the rug, race into bed with the blankets stored under the bed.

I had about 60 seconds. It's a long time, but it's a short time when the parents are on the way in.

The Roches were worth it.
