The one season produced by Woody Allen's longtime producer Jean Doumanian was wretched. After that. NBC sports guy Dick Ebersol took over, and for a few years the show was... OK, but a very different and much more conventional show from the Michaels SNL. Eddie Murphy was the one guy who seemed to be taking some risks.
Ebersol's last season with Short and Crystal was particularly unusual in that he decided to just go with a lot of established top-drawer talent. It was often very funny that year, and was probably more consistently funny than in the early days, but, again, not particularly groundbreaking.
