Okay.

I'm only saying this one time.

One time.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a painfully honest, sweet and terrible, rueful, uplifting, adult, contemplative, enigmatic, surreal little film that adroitly addresses so many things about breakups and memory and incompatibility in the face of impulsive fun-having. It's not a perfect film, no, but it's at least one that stays with you afterwards and makes you think, for good or bad.

So why the hell has it only made 16 goddamn million dollars in two weeks of release? Scooby-Doo 2 (admittedly not rated R, and admittedly a kid's film, but still) made nearly double that in its first weekend alone. There's no reason Eternal Sunshine couldn't have done the same.

Come on, people. Go see the movie. Help make it at least break even ($35M budget, according to IMDB.) I know studios often feel safe taking risks with good films by churning out the crappy moneymakers, but this is ridiculous. It deserves a lot more than that. I mean, hell, I know who's reading this. I know y'all are smart people who have the capacity to think, really think, and enjoy a unique film.

NO I DON'T MEAN GO SEE SCOOBY-DOO 2. Oy, I give up.

I'm definitely intrigued by it, but I have some hesitation due to perceived device similarity to the movie "Memento". And "Memento" wigged me right out.

But I definitely trust your recommendation in such matters, and will try to get to see it sometime before it goes poof.

It really wasn't like Memento -- Carrey's character doesn't suffer from extreme short-term memory; he wants his memory of the relationship with Winslet's character wiped (to be fair, she wiped her memory of him first.)

I will say the last 10 minutes are heartwrenching. Though the last 90 seconds are rather, yes, sweet.

Would like to see it, but don't have it high on the priority list. (Despite the fact that I bought the Michel Gondry music videos DVD.)

I've heard from a couple of people that they HATED it. Most people don't want quirky. After a long week of grinding away at their jobs, they don't want to have to puzzle their way through anything involved. They just want straightforward, light entertainment. This ain't it.

My nephew was all wound up about seeing Scooby Doo 2 when it came out. I imagine he's dragged his grandmother to see it already.

It's the most un-Jim Carrey role I've seen him in yet -- he did more mugging in The Truman Show than he does in Eternal Sunshine. Off the top of my head, I can only think of one scene in which he makes a goofy face (he tries to open his eyes wide and wake himself out of the memory-erasing process) and even then, it's pretty much plot-driven and not an actor's indulgence.

A very good job at breaking typecast, really.

OK, so, a month later and I did go and see it. And I agree with you. thanks for making me ignore the fact it had the horrible Mr C in it.
