Breaking in new boots is tough. I remember the lesson from last year, when I broke in new boots then, but I forgot exactly how tough it can be. Especially if the boots have nice high tops to 'em and you've been wearing lowboy sneakers for most of the year.

Basically I gots some nice abrasions all around my ankles that really felt great when the hot water hit 'em this morning. Yeah, I'm wearin the thick socks today, that's for sure.

I liken this to being a kid and going barefoot for the first time in the spring. We had an exceptionally rocky driveway, and running up and down it to get the mail every day started out as a painful trial, but as summer rolled around, you were sprinting over them stones like a champ. In a week or so I'm gonna be just fine, but for now, every chance I get to take the boots off will be a welcome, blessed event.

Not that this will help at the moment, but I try to make a habit of wearing new shoes around the house for a few days at the beginning. It's a nice low-stress way to start breaking them in, and if they start to get painful, you can just take them off for a while.

But...ow.

Alternate Uses For Petroleum Jelly, No. 37:

Not sure it is warranted for boot-breaking-in, but when I break in new running shoes (or any time I go hiking actually) I spread a thin layer of petroleum jelly on my feets, then put the socks and the new shoes and I remain happily blister-free.

It's a funny feeling though (especially if you use too much) and of little use to you know that you're already in pain but c'est la stuff.

I've had the ankle abrasion problem, too. But I only get blisters with high heels, so unless you're wearing a lot of those... *grin*

Ankle caresses

I call those ankle caresses "Drive-by lovin'," or just "drive-bys." As in, "Mr. Abbie gave me some sweet drive-by lovin'" when I got home last night," or "Damnit, I wish Martha would quit it with the drive-bys."
