computer death

spatchEarly yesterday morning I thought it'd be a good idea to reboot my computer. The computer enjoys a nice reboot every now and then. I also seem to recall it wasn't going to let me continue doing what I wanted to do without rebooting. Win98SE, ancient 800MHz machine, some amount of RAM.
Then, first, as I put in my Windows login, ZANG! Hit with an infinite blue screen of death. Keep on hitting any key there, pal, it ain't going to do you very good. So we reach down for the little red panic button on the side of the machine.
Now every time it loads up, ZOWIE! Nothing but "Windows Protection Error. Press any key to restart." Oh, sure, I can boot into Safe Mode, which will be good so I can make a bootable floppy, because it seems that I'm going to have to reinstall the cranky old dinosaur OS. Sigh.
The real bummer of this story is that I had Alpengeist sitting quietly next to the computer, ready to boot and be used to access Das Unternet in case of original machine failure. No problem, I give Alpie the ol' boot, and what do you know: the keyboard connector inside has gone on the fritz and I can't use any keyboards there. So, hey, great. Nothing works anymore in this crazy mixed-up upside-down apartment.
