I can't decide which bit of A Mighty Wind is more brilliant: The spot-on folk song parodies, or the spot-on album covers.

When I first saw the film, the theatre was playing the soundtrack in the auditorium before the show. I really can't be angry for any spoiling that may or may not have happened, because just idly listening to the Folksmen before knowing a thing about 'em, I just thought the theatre had found some Chad Mitchell Trio-esque CD to play. When I heard the highway line, I realized something was up. I also knew I was gonna be in for a big big treat.

Parodies or not, I thought the music was pretty great. I went online to see who actually did the playing and singing, and I found out that the cast wrote and performed all of the songs and instruments. Sure, they're funny and whatnot, but that's a very talented cast to do all of that. The concert at the end was also done live and in front of all of those people, recorded almost in real time.

You're right. They're extremely talented. You can watch most of the concert on the DVD, too. The cast also did a very truncated live tour in 2003; aussie_nyc got to see them in New York City, the lucky devil, but the Boston show I was going to attend was cancelled.

McKean, Shearer and Guest actually opened for themselves with that number. The Folksmen were Spinal Tap's opening act for at least one tour, giving the trio the rare distinction of actually being booed by the crowd who would, one costume, makeup and instrument change later, cheer them onstage.
