I drove last night. The first time in nearly two years. Route 2A, even, at night. In a little Subaru that keeps slipping gears. And I couldn't believe how much I missed the experience.

[livejournal.com profile] charva and I went out to the Summer Shack and L. had herself a few Rum Runners, whereas I kept to the seafood and raw bar. So when it was time to leave, I designatedly drove while L. enjoyed a pleasant buzz in the passenger seat. We stopped for gas at her usual place, a small indie full-service gas station on Broadway just outside Ball Square. There we chatted with one of the usual attendants, a pleasant woman whose name I just plain forgot so I'm going to call her Amy.

"Why you no drive?" Amy asked L. It was her car, after all.

"Oh, well, I'm drunk!" L. responded cheerfully. Amy then leaned in further through the window.

"Can I tell you big secret?" Amy asked. "I'm little drunk too! Smell!" L. caught a whiff of the cognac, and we all whooped and cheered there in the car.

It was just another Ball Square Thursday night.

I'm reminded of a recent cookout at one of my colleagues' place, where one participant was a Japanese student named Suke. (I think that's how it's spelled; it's pronounced Soo-kay.)

Anyway, there were margaritas and Mike's and things, and at one point, Suke wandered by with this huge grin and announced, "I am very drunk, I think maybe."

He was not allowed to leave for some time after that.
