Martha is at the vet's early; they let Jude bring her in nearly immediately when I called.

Kitty has inflamed liver and is jaundiced. Not good.

More updates soon. My phone is buzzing so I'm about to call back.

UPDATE: Martha has a fatty liver. She probably hasn't been eating for two weeks, though I've seen her regularly go in and out of the kitty corner (so I never noticed anything was amiss, goddammit.) Dr. Ruth at Porter Square theorizes the stress of moving did it to her, and since she didn't eat, her fat reserves went to her liver. Now the liver won't process the toxins as it should. So not only do we have a cat who doesn't want to eat, but a jaundiced kitty as well and when you're covered in black fur, it's kinda hard to see the yellowed skin.

Dr. Ruth does say this is reversible if care is pursued aggressively. This means that Martha needs to go to a 24-hour care facility. She needs a 24-hour IV drip. She needs a feeding tube installed, bloodwork done, and probably some abdominal peering and prodding as well. She needs to stay for several days at minimum.

Martha needs to go to Angell.

Angell is not cheap.

Oog.

oh gack. yes, please make with the paypal linkup. our friend lost a kitty this year to this exact thing. is scary. I learned from that experience that kitties not eating = potentially grave situation. I'm so sorry, and will be crossing fingers and toes for Martha.

Oh, poor Martha! I do know two people whose cats went through a bout of the same thing and both of them pulled through and are okay now, if that helps. One of them had the feeding tube thing, and the other one just had to get force-fed for a while.

I get paid on Friday and I can't help much but I can (and will) kick in a little bit. Do make a Martha fund. Us cat people know where the priorities are. I was going to give a bit to Noah's Wish for hurricane critters, but an Actual Known Cat is more important. So.

I am glad you took her in as soon as you noticed something! Continuing to send good thoughts for a quick and full recovery...

Crap! Poor Martha was probably too ill to fully enjoy Talk Like a Pirate Day, too.

I'm glad to hear that it's reversable. I hope she feels better soon. I love Martha and her hijinx!

Man, what is with cats and eating? If you switch their food too abruptly, they go into an intestinal tailspin. If you stress them out, they shut down completely...

Sorry about your kitty. I hope she gets better quickly.

Would Abbie be willing to pass along any new donations made to his fund on Martha's behalf?

Our local kitty rescue group was able to bring back a kitty that had exactly that problem (liver lipidosis is I think the fancy name for it) to full health. Now she's perky as can be. :)

You could try looking around in the local area for animal rescue groups who would be willing to help you out financially. Our group does so in our county, and I imagine we're not completely unique in this.

*fingers still crossed*

Yep, that's exactly what happened to my friend's cat. Here's a few articles she wrote about the experience:

How it began
It worked out in the end

You may need to call in the cavalry for help feeding Martha, but she's got a good chance.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. It sucks *hug*

Angell can set it up so that you can donate to a specific patient there, so you don't need to worry about paypal fees eating into any donations.

I work in a vet's office, and I am continually annoyed when animals don't get the treatment they deserve for one reason or another. Definitely count on me for a donation.
