oh what fresh hell is this
Jan. 23rd, 2006 05:16 pmIn other news, we're having a funeral for irony because it appears to be well and truly murdered.
EDIT: But maybe that's the point. If Mothersbaugh & Co. have indeed pulled a good one over Disney, then more power to 'em.

Re: thoughts
Date: 2006-02-02 01:23 pm (UTC)There are many meanings of the word "subversive", and I suspect that part of the problme is that we are using fundamentally different definitions. I am looking at subversion as any process by which a force or group that is marginalized influences the nature of the mainstream to its benefit, frequently acquiring a fair amount of popularity along the way. This process often, but not inherently, causes some unease in the norms. Your definition of "subversive" - and please, correct me if I'm wrong - inherently includes freaking the norms. Given that? You're right. The mainstream pretty much isn't ever subversive. Unless you can develop enough of a groundswell of freaks, both in influence and number, to attract sheep to the freak banner (for example, the hippies) you will never have enough people rallied under the freak banner to define the mainstream in a way that norms in general don't like. You might be able to get, say, the Texas norms unhappy about the Massachusetts norms, or the City norms and the Country norms in some sort of a mutually disturbed disagreement, but norms, in general, don't enjoy being freaked, and will always have enough numbers to have a major impact on the shape of the zeitgeist.
remember...
No matter how hideous your failure
or how glorious your success
one billion Chinese
couldn't care less.
If you want to be effective in action, it just takes two things.
Know What Works.
Do What Works.
If you want to know what works, consider history. What has worked in the past is at least a decent start. What is working now is probably also a good indicator. Remember to look amongst your enemies, as well as your friends, and do recall that 20 years from today, we will have lost two decades of older folks, and everyone currently at the "gleam in eye" stage or later will have the vote. Really, what is it that you want?
