I cropped Jon out of the last panel (his line is "It's going to be one of those weeks") and closed the panel up nicely, but unfortunately black and white line art doesn't scale down very well so I can't fit it to 100 LJ-friendly pixels.

But still.

Yeah.

Ah, the good old days of Garfield. When you could always count on his belly outgrowing his feet at least once a year.

I don't understand any of this, either.

Thoughts on Garfield

I was going to ask about that in your previous post.

I have a hard time hatin' on Garfield. I was an absolute Garfield FIEND when I was a kid. I won't defend what the strip became after it turned into a merchandising machine, but back in the day, it was pretty darn entertaining. And actually, even today, there are enough strips that are moderately entertaining (like this one—that snowman cracks me up) or just plain weird (like this one and this one) that I don't hate myself for taking the time to read it. But then again, the out-and-out weirdness of the series that began with this strip bought Garfield a lot of good will with me.

And come on, what are ya gonna do, read "Hi and Lois?" Seriously.

Yeah, I gotta agree with a lot of what you said. But personally, I'm a bit afraid to go back and reread the Garfield books I liked as a kid, lest I discover that they're all terrible, and I just had no taste in my formative years.

Yeah, is hard to iconize comic strips, what with the tendency for tallness and tiny tiny font.

Sometimes it helps when there are no characters in the panel.

I thought that was too obscure for anyone else to both remember and think worth referencing.

What Jon realized too late is that it's always going to be one of those weeks. (Which is why I adore Calvin's method — crash helmet and cape — for generalized preparation.)
