It appears that Radio 104 in Connecticut has, by the infallible grace and wisdom of Clear Channel Communications, had its format changed from rock to hip-hop. I'm sure the Hartford market was just dying for another hip-hop station, and it's really nice to see Clear Channel step to the plate and give the people just what they want. I'm sure those who were fans of the rock format will go back to illegal MP3s or humming tunes they like in their head or something.

(I'm also pretty sure the rock format of Radio 104 in its waning days was different than the format I remember, which was at the time the only alternative rock station you could get in Southern New England, so I really have no place to complain, but still. Nobody likes a format change, especially not one that drastic. But kids'll get over it cause there ain't much they can do about it anyway.)

I still remember when 104 went from soft adult contemporary (all Steve Winwood, all the time!) to the first alternative station in the United States I ever listened to. November 1, 1994, if I recall correctly. I used to have 104 on my clock radio because they actually played music in the morning (waking up to "Back in the High Life" was fine with me). One day, the alarm went off and they were playing Smashing Pumpkins. I was very confused. I thought maybe some strange Halloween prank had occurred.

For the next several months, they were completely no-talk, as they hadn't yet hired new staff and DJs. It was bliss. They had my loyalty for the rest of my stay in Connecticut.

I remember the DJ-less format for a while. We all thought that it might just be the way the station would be -- all music, no chatter. Opinions differed on whether or not that was a good thing.
