I was all set to write a bit about The Prestige (completely awesome, you must see it or risk avoiding spoiler discussions the rest of your life) but then all of a sudden out of complete nowhere came

GENE GENE THE DANCING MACHINE

also of interest: The Unknown Comic takes on Chuckie Baby, with a quick shot of Steve Martin as a judge. I didn't know Steve Martin was ever a judge on the Gong Show. Blows my mind, it does.

And everyone's favorite, slightly work-risque, the infamous Popsicle Twins act, which for some reason on the show was called "Have You Got a Nickel?" This was the act that got the show yanked for a while.

Man, oh, man. The Gong Show was Western Civilization at its apex.

and if you haven't seen the brilliant "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind", starring a brilliant Sam Rockwell, or at least read the book, you should.

It's made even better with that shadow of a doubt that he really might have taken off his leisure suit, picked up a walther PPK, and wiped out someone inconvenient to Nixon after the show.

For those two I've *definitely* got a nickel. And we have "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" sitting here, from Netflix, and I'm hoping to one day convince my wife to actually watch it.

You REALLY have to stop reading my mind, as I spent some time at work yesterday watching the two Gene Gene clips referenced in his Wikipedia entry. Yesterday's chat with [livejournal.com profile] n0nnhas reflects this:

(2:27:44 PM) Norton9M: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryCvUNziFEw
(2:27:51 PM) Norton9M: The late 70s were a strange time on TV.
(2:31:11 PM) p0llyw0g: hahahaha
(2:32:04 PM) p0llyw0g: sam rockwell did a good job playing what's his face
(2:34:03 PM) Norton9M: Yes, and there were plenty of what my friend Ian calls "Craig shots," which are "unnecessary naked male ass shots."
(2:37:03 PM) Norton9M: I still think the best part of the show is right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceETKSktojw

In many ways, watching Gene Gene dance is the pinnacle of 70s TV, and probably TV in general.

You've got the same URL twice in there - Popsicle Twins leads to the Unknown Comic video.

The Gong Show is the pinnacle of Western civilisation. It's been all downhill from there.

you've read queen of the oddballs, yes? the writer performed on the gong show at one point, juggling and singing a song she cowrote with tom lehrer.
