Which PBS science show had the best theme? LET'S TAKE IT TO YOUTUBE:

Newton's Apple with its tasty Kraftwerk groove
OR
3-2-1 Contact with the wah-wah guitar and bombastic WALL O' BRASS

[Poll #897553]

And if you just fulfilled your civic duty by voting, here's an extra treat: Siskel & Ebert on Sesame Street teaching Telly and Oscar their movie critic exercises.

ps. have you ever spun -- on ice??

The thing I remember about the 3-2-1 Contact opening titles was just that clip of the frog eating a bug in which its eyeball sucks into its head to push the bug down its throat.

...it's the SECRET! it's the MOMENT!...

I had the hugest crush on Lisa. Notwithstanding that, I really, really LOVED that show. (Exceptin' when they didn't show a Bloodhound Gang ep, that made a wee 'vark very sad).

I remember my mom suggesting to me that the trio were acting a lot younger than they really were. Really scrambled my mind.

The 3-2-1-Contact intro gave me nostalgia-chills just now, but I always liked the Newton's Apple theme better. The theme and the host's mustache are really the only things I recall from the show. And the one time he talked about how video games worked by playing Millipede in the studio.

I'd forgotten that I watched Newton's Apple. I'm beginning to think that I watched everything PBS ever had and just forgot (of course, we've never had cable so that's not a huge surprise).

Needless to say, I remembered the 3-2-1 Contact theme before listening and I couldn't remember the Newton's Apple one at all.

... and yes, actually, I have spun -- on ice. The hard part is stopping without falling down.

It has to be 3-2-1 Contact because 20 years later I can still sing the entire damn theme song AND the theme song for The Bloodhound Gang.

In fact often in conversations if someone says the word contact and there's a slight pause afterwards, I'm always tempted to chime in "is the answer... why everything happens...."

You know, I was a little bummed when PBS got rid of the station IDs at the beginning of the program, but that KTCA intro on the Newton's Apple clip was a little weak. I guess they couldn't all be the awesomely creepy WGBH intro (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Evz73PXy01I)...

Yeah, actually I wanted a comedy third option so I could vote for "any given PBS station ID jingle". Those synth nuggets just ruled.

When I was little, I loved Newton's Apple! I never watched 3-2-1 Contact, though. Nevertheless, the latter's theme is definitely better.

3-2-1 Contact wins hands down, but I'd offer Reading Rainbow an honorable mention.

My vote automatically goes for 3-2-1 Contact because I can't remember what the Newton's Apple theme sounded like. On the other hand, I can remember what the opening of Newton's Apple looked like, but not as much for 3-2-1 Contact. Odd.

When I was a kid I used to rush into the room just to listen to the theme song from Newton's Apple. It reigns supreme!
