What do you reckon this thing is?

Mystery Object

Neil and I saw it at the Goodwill store in Davis Square yesterday, when we were shopping for sound effects equipment (our haul included a broken bedpost and a beat-up leather briefcase, perfect for nice thwacking sounds. Now we just need some good reasons to thwack stuff!) It's a wooden stand with a painted wooden ball on top and a tripod set of legs on the bottom. There were ropes threaded all throughout. There was also a second one of these right next to it. We had no idea what they were supposed to be used for, and if Goodwill knew the secret, it wasn't telling.

Why, you're welcome.

Oh, you're welcome.

Why, it appears to be a Thing With Which to Choke Babies.

They must have had twins.

Best honest guess is some sort of martial arts practice equipment.

All other guesses make me giggle like little girl, oh yes.

I was definitely thinking it would twirl around and attack the Shaolin examinees in a kung fu movie.

I was thinking it might be some kind of badly-constructed homemade bird activity centre. Too many ropes and little holes for claws to catch on, though.

That looks like a miniature tether ball set gone horribly awry.

Looks like one of those "impossible" puzzles where there's usually some rope, and a ring, and a wood shape too big to pass through the ring, and you have to figure out how to get the thing apart somehow.

Only much bigger and apparantly in some sort of Siamese Septuplets configuration.

Was the "thank you" adjacent to smoot measurements?

(I think I was thanked by the same sticker on a bridge yesterday...)
