[City of Heroes] back in good guy mode

(for those just joining us, I often play City of Heroes/Villains and enjoy writing about whatever hero or villain I've concocted. From Sergeant Peppermint to The Spammer, Bowery Bill to The Mildly Peeved Scotsman, it's all fun.)

After spending way too much time recently on the Villains side of City Of Whatevers, I decided to give The Spammer and Schadenfreude, both now in their 30s, a much-needed vacation. I headed on back to the hero side to see what fun I could have. I had a recent hero kicking around; I believe I posted about him back in November but didn't do anything with him except keep the name and bio. So, well, I brought him up, he who wields a katana and has amazing regenerative powers, and began to fight crime once more...

as SAMURAI ACCOUNTANT



Here he is as a rank newcomer, all Level 1 and just able to hold his sword properly without cutting himself. As evidenced by the bio, Jeffrey the Samurai Accountant is very serious about both accounting and the samurai oath of fealty. The firm of Macomber, Wilson and Klein makes sure to give him lots of paperwork to do, as he feels he best serves the company that way. On his days off, however, he fights crime to uphold the good name of the firm. Sure, the CEO doesn't understand why Jeffrey calls him "dime yo" or whatever, but after making sure it wasn't a slur or something equally insulting, he takes it in good stride. Fortunately, Jeffrey is a master number cruncher as well as master swordsman, which means good job security for him. Were he to be laid off, he would have to wander the financial district as a ronin and he does not want that.

Anyway. An evening or two of gameplay later, I managed to get him halfway through level 11.

Finally at level 10, you're able to create a supergroup if you wish. Naturally, Samurai Accountant must belong to the firm, so "Macomber Wilson and Klein" it is (no commas allowed in supergroup names, unfortunately.)

For those who understand City of Heroes game mechanics or can pretend like they do, Samurai Accountant is a katana/regen scrapper. This combination is great for soloing; the katana primary powerset means quick but reasonably damaging attacks that also reduce an enemy's defense, plus a wonderful power called "Divine Avalanche", which is both an attack and a defense buff for you. That means you're more protected, but your enemy is less protected. Yay! You win!

The regeneration secondary powerset means you recover both health and endurance quickly. You also have a quickly-recharging heal when you need it, and you also get Dull Pain, one of the best defensive powers in the game. Basically, Dull Pain increases your maximum hit points for a goodly amount of time, and is great for boss fights.

There's more to the powersets than this brief rundown, of course, but at level 11, that's about as good as it gets. Hooray for Samurai Accountant!

Cool! I thought I was the only person I knew who still played CoH.

I know the general population of Folks-I-Know has slacked off a bit; some of 'em have moved on to Puzzle Pirates, some installed the WoW Burning Sensation expansion, others I don't know they just disappeared.

I mostly play solo (notorious multitasker; I like pausing in the middle of a door mission to work on some other project) but I chat globally with the SA Goons and some other folks. It's kinda like playing a fun action game with wacky chat too.

I played CoH for a week or two, but it just didn't grab me. Too repetitive.

So of course, I grabbed my trusty spreadsheet program and kitchen timer, and went over to EVE-Online.

WARP DRIVE ACTIVATED.

ungratefulninja and I once began fleshing out an idea for a text-based EvE client because, honestly, it's Trade Wars 2002 with shiny graphics and new age music.

We figured it wouldn't be too hard, once we'd sussed out the packet info, to write up even an ANSI-based interface. Directional vectors, market lookup, communications, even targeting and combat would be easy to monitor and report via text. That way you could keep that little process running to warp 17 hops while you did other, more useful things, with your computer's processor cycles.

Nothing came out of the project, mostly due to inertia and other such things, and also due to the fact that it'd get us banned. But then again, I don't want to play in a universe where I can't run the M&M Enterprises corporation (damn you, whoever you are!)

As I believe I said before: I only wish I could come up with something this good.

Although the dark melee/stone armor brute I created based on my brother is pretty good.

Dark/stone for your brother, eh? That sounds cool. Is he a smashy-type depresso?

I created a sonic/dark corruptor named Angsty Goth Girl -- she'll whine you into submission. But I run into trouble when I switch from strictly melee characters to mostly ranged characters; I always forget the first few battles and end up in way over my head.

My favorite brute combo so far is Energy Melee/Energy Aura. You get some excellent defenses plus an AoE endurance drain, and Energy Melee has some of the most powerful attacks villianside. And you get GLOWY POMPOMS OF DEATH on your fists. I'm glad they put Enhancement Diversification in instead of nerfing individual powers, because EM/EA is sick enough as it is. Hooray for continually chewing thru yellows and oranges solo with almost a full rage bar, and taking reds down with just a wee bit of effort! :P

Yeah, I've got an EM/EA brute too...Liverpool Hooligan, on Virtue. He's fun. Really, all the brute sets are a really good time.

I never got involved in CoH because I had a 7-year-old computer, but my brand-spankin' new one might be able to handle it. Does it come on 8" floppies?

Just wanted to let you know that the folks at Wilkerson Associates (fka Wilkerson, Guthmann, + Johnson (see how clever they are to use a plus sign instead of an '"and" or ampersand?)) are getting quite a kick out of this.
