Halfway down the stairs Is a stair Where I sit. There isn't any Other stair Quite like It. I'm not at the bottom, I'm not at the top; So this is the stair Where I always Stop.
I have fond memories of Robin singing this too (and have both the Robin version and the version that Rowlf sang on his "lounge act" album, Ol' Brown Ears Is Back.) I can't remember who it was who actually set it to music, but it wasn't Raposo... it was someone else who'd done quite a few musical adaptations of Milne poems. Rowlf also sings "Cottleston Pie" on his album, for instance, and it's rather sweet.
Additionally, some Muppeteers seem to have had a thing for Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind", as both Rowlf and Floyd, of all people, have sung it on albums. Problem is, they don't sing it very well.
Rowlf and Robin did lovely versions of them. And this was the REAL Rowlf, voiced by Jim Henson. Also, I love the picture of Mr. Abbie. He's almost 10 years old, I think, how is he doing?
He'll be 10 on April 30 and is amazingly spry in his middle-aged corpulence; I think it's all the stair-running he does. He still chases flying insects and other things what move, he still tears around the house when it's Crazy Time, and he curls up and sleeps the rest of the day.
For some reason, this cover really bothers me. Maybe it's because on the original, they look as though they recently got done doing it, or were just about to.
I think I remember having a non-Muppet, non-Disney LP of those adaptations. One side was "The Hums of Pooh" and the other side was poems from "When We Were Very Young", "Now We Are Six" etc. "Halfway Up The Stairs" and "Cottleston Pie" were in there.
Yeah. The first place I ever remember hearing this poem was on The Muppet Show album. I have the season one collection of the Muppet Show so I also own the footage as well now. I found out that we didn't see it in the states because of US show length vs UK show length, which means this was the 'UK Only' segment of that particular show... funny that I can't remember who was the guest star right now. I think it was Florence Henderson.
