I just noticed an ad for the North Shore Music Theatre that advertised its upcoming season, which included a stage adaptation of Disney's raging phenomenon (doo doo dee doo doo) that is their made-for-TV teen movie High School Musical. I haven't seen the thing, but you can guess from the title that it's a show about a high school putting on a musical. And, according to several Disney-watching sites, schools have already expressed interest in getting the stage rights for their own performances. So if the rights were granted...

We'd have a high school.

Putting on a musical.

About a high school.

Putting on a musical.

Oh, sure, shows-within-shows ain't nothin new (sup, Kiss Me, Kate; how ya doin, The Producers?) but this... this is almost just too meta for me.

Unless one was to write a screenplay about a high school... putting on a musical... about a high school... putting on a musical...

Based on what I've seen locally, Disney has no problem granting rights to every single company that wants to stage the show.

High School Musical is an insane cash cow for Disney. The movie itself is laughably addictive (I've seen it 4 or 5 times), but it's become a trilogy (the 2nd movie comes out this summer), a tour, debut albums for the female leads in the movie, and at least two board games inspired by the movie. The soundtrack itself has gone 4x platinum.

And despite spatch's joking - there are a lot of high schools (and junior high!) school productions. Wanna check it out?

It is pretty darn amazing considering I don't think Disney gave much promotion to it when it went out on TV.

I am just very amused at the layers of meta involved when a high school puts the show on, and quite amazed at the number of schools who are putting it on. Whoa.

I first saw it in late January last year during their "kareoke" version, but I've seen a version where they try to teach you the dance steps. There's also a theatrical spin-off (Haunted High School Musical!!!!1111)

The meta astounds me as well, but it should've never gotten this far! It was directed by the choreographer of Dirty Dancing!
