Strangely, I first remember seeing him on milk cartons at school; I think it was some sort of series on authors' advice about how best to enjoy reading.
Judging from the ad, I'm pretty sure that voiceover is Cicely Tyson's. And just look what coffee does for her -- it helped her win an award for her powerful performance in the play "Man Gets Slapped!"
These ads probably had an embarrassingly strong influence on my current love of coffee.
There's one I remember where the voiceover said something like "coffee calms you down while....(blah blah blah)" and I think they got in trouble for it.
I remember that tagline, too. One of the ads definitely mentioned coffee's amazing ability to "calm you down" while "picking you up" or somesuch. I remember my parents laughing like loons when they saw that one.
