I hit sometheeng, yes? No?
Jun. 19th, 2007 01:01 pmGuess what's coming to the Kendall next week with a new 35mm print? One week only. The songs will leave my head in, oh, November at the earliest.
I caught the trailer for it on Saturday when I went to see PAPRIKA and was very very very very very pleasantly surprised. So surprised I think I said "holy shit!" out loud an' everything.
Looking forward to seeing it on the big screen is one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dark, vague-feelings-of-impending-abstract-doom day.

Date: 2007-06-19 06:20 pm (UTC)The story isn't as strong as it could be, though, the dream analysis is a kind of Freud-lite by way of Tokyo, and there's at least One Implausible "Wait, where the hell did THAT come from?!" Resolution near the end.
However, it's structured like a dream (kind of like Time Bandits in that regard) and things shift from The Real World into A Dream and back out without any warning and a lot of cryptic lines near the beginning of the film are explained satisfyingly by the end of it all. And it's got a pretty decent soundtrack, too. A lot of fun to watch on the big screen.
What's the most interesting to note is the Japanese view of dreams. They've got a lot more tolerance on the non-sequitur than the Freudians. Not every dream is presumed to have Hidden, Deeper Meaning. It's okay to dream about a happy, walking refrigerator and not speculate on its meaning. The dreams that remain unresolved, however, are the ones which are investigated.
Plus you get a great lesson on the time-honored cinematography goof of "crossing the line" and why it can be disconcerting.
though crossing the line does work in certain cases, they gotta be set up well to alleviate the cognitive confusion.
So, yeah. I think you'll dig it.
