(The set-up: Guy Caballero, president and general manager of SCTV, is ruminating over his past affair with chanteuse Lola Heatherton.)

GUY CABALLERO: I'm sorry, Lola. I had to cancel our love. It was doing badly in the overnights.

Volume 1 of the SCTV DVD set is absosmashly full of some of the most brilliant comedy I've seen in a long, long, long time.

SCTV was such a strange show, not least in that it had one of the most extreme quality arcs I've ever seen. It's clear that in the 1970s they had absolutely no idea what they were doing, yet by the time of the NBC episodes they were cranking out some of the funniest stuff ever in mass industrial quantities (only to deteriorate again as most of the cast left--Martin Short gave it some extra life but the Cinemax episodes mostly aren't that good).

Fortunately Shout! Factory started with the best material.
