Greetings from Denver

The Denver International Airport is a miraculous place that looks as if they decided to smush a Cirque du Soleil tent into a shopping mall for shits, and then let airplanes use it too for giggles. There is also an amazing cross-section of humanity wandering about, bothering me constantly with their wheelie suitcases. I much prefer the ol' backpack though I do think the checked duffel bag is going to need a replacement. It will be replaced by another duffel bag. I harbor no desire for wheelie suitcases, so please cross them off the Christmas list, thank you kindly.

However, this airport has a bar what has Fat Tire on tap, so I have about 75% fewer complaints now and the moving walkways are a lot of fun to ride back and forth.

And this airport has one of those 25 cents-a-minute Intar Web kiosks, so I thought I'd INSERT COIN and reply to some email I shoulda replied to yesterday. Now I'm all caught up and thinking that an entry would be great.

This kiosk has World of Warcraft on it. How nice is that? Hooray! I can spend two bits a minute logging in for grins and going HAY GUYS I'M AT THE AIRPORT LET'S GO RAID KARAZHAN!!!!1

I fired up the client. It needed a patching. And the patching failed.

Blizzard wins again.



oh by the way Churr raided Karazhan earlier this week with a bunch of wiseacres and won his first ever Tier 4 drop: a token that, when inserted into the right Aldor draenei mouth, gave him Cyclone Gauntlets. Oh the endgame! We win!

Based on the standard length o' time for an update download, the patch should cost $186.75 on the kiosk.

Actually, the patch downloaded rather quickly. But it didn't go into the right directory that WoW was expecting (an older version of the client, I think, dumped the patch files directly into the WoW root folder; you had to manually throw them into the Patches directory to get the darn patcher to work right.)

At any rate I couldn't do that on a public terminal, so I instead made happily snarky comments about the Denver Airport.

As it was, my layover was Drinkable And Internettably short and I stayed airside, behind security the entire time.

Time was anyone could hang out in the departure terminals and overpriced airport bars. I remember a certain Minneapolis/St. Paul airport bar shindig back in 1998, those innocent days when we thought changing the 1 in our year to a 2 was gonna blow the entire world up...

Moving sidewalks are a blast. As long as everyone else on them is moving too, anyway.

Back in Bad Guy Burgh, I got a Pangean Soil as a random drop--a piece of salvage that normally goes on the Black Market for about 3 million infamy. Boo. Yah.

I used to have to fly through there all the time, going to Boise on business. I think I took refuge at that bar once myself. There is an OK burrito place in there too.

I would alarmingly often have to make the transfer from the very end of one terminal to the very end of another, with a half hour to do it. No time for burritos or beer.

If the bar was the one on the United side of things with the vague sports theme and menu that listed the prices on scoreboards (the cheeseburger was apparently 8 to 95) then yes, that was indeed the refugee bar.

People are crazy. But then again, I pack light, so I have one check-in duffel which looks like a gray slug on the baggage claim belt, and my carryon backpack. Anything else is just too extravagant. I'm glad I don't play golf, I guess.

I prefer the mexican cantina themed place upstairs to the bar you were at. The food is way better and they have some of the cheapest long islands and margaritas of any airport bar that I frequent. :)
