I remember being at a particularly dismal Blue Jays game once where a few fans were chanting "Go Leafs* Go". I think it implies that (a) the team being cheered for is so important that people can cheer for it out of context, but also that (b) people are ready to give up on the team that is currently on the field.

* The Toronto Maple Leafs, our NHL hockey team. Yes, it's Leafs, not Leaves.

Huh. Hockey is the only place I've ever heard it said that way. I figure it's okay as long as we say Smurfs instead of Smurves.

Fun fact: apparently 'dwarfs' are people of extreme short stature due to congenital or heritable condition, while 'dwarves' are those little bearded guys who live under mountains.

Was there a version of 'King of Spain' with the Leafs in that line? The version I know has the Habs calling him up to drive the zamboni.

The Leafs definitely call him up on the Bargainville album, that much I know. Aren't there two versions on Live Noise? Maybe one features the Habs if they were recording up in Montreal.

Well, yes, and we don't like to dwell on that. If aliens descended on Earth in the name of peace, chances are a Bostonian would start up a "Yankees Suck" chant in the midst of the public reception.

Course, the positivity this time around is greatly encouraged. I mean, at the time of the Pats' Super Bowl victory parade, the Sox weren't looking to win Game 7 of the ALCS.

Beating the Dolphins was pretty much a fait accompli; outright stomping the crap out of them ("The score: Patriots 42, Miami 7, and for those of you tuning in, yes, that is a halftime score...") takes a bit of mojo. Luck? Not so much, I guess. At least not for the 7-0 Undefeated Pats. (Giving up 21 points in the fourth quarter, though, guys, kinda sloppy...)

(But Dice-K and his merry band of batters needs all the mojo they can get tonight. And they need to keep Eric Gagne the HELL away from the bullpen. I say they oughta just hole him up in the Ritz-Carlton here in Boston, give him free room service and a TV so he can watch the game.)

it'll be fun to see if the Donkeys fans get the Lets Go Rockies chant going tonight. Tough TV call too - watch the Broncos get killed or watch to see who gets to play the Rockies next week. This town isn't used to such multitasking.
