The trial version of the Spore Creature Creator was put on a CDROM for some UK gamer mag and now it's all over the intarwebs. And lo is it brilliant. Making critters is easy and insanely addictive. I made some!


This one is Jethro.

Oh, and there's video. Here's Jethro doing a dance with little miniature Jethros. My god the full version is gonna be awesome with a capital Awesome.

It's not cracked, really. The trial program is to be Intarwebbed tomorrow, but copies were inadvertently distributed ahead of time on a gaming magazine's CDROM. Maxis has disabled the online features (you can't register and login yet to upload stuff) but seems to have said "Eh, well, it was an honest mistake 48 hours ahead of time, no real reason to get too pissed about it." It's creating some nice advance buzz, that's for sure.

And if you really want to play with a clean conscience, the creator standalone is being officially released tomorrow, so you don't have to wait all that long.

So it turns out that I really can't, after all. I tried downloading the Mac version, and it doesn't work. "Cannot run Spore Demo because the file is damaged or incomplete."

Three times I got that error.

Based on the character designs I've seen, it looks as if there would be no problem having competing societies of Toejams & Earls.

Yeah, Toejams and Earls are easy enough to make, though clothing options are pretty much non-existent. I tried to make a Toejam and the eyestalks and three legs were okay (the walking animation was kinda wonky though) but you can't make his hat or his phat bling without improvising (and five minutes' worth of improvising with the limited features of the trial creator didn't do much.) Earl doesn't get his jams, neither, which could be potentially embarrassing. Also, you can't save a critter unless it has a mouth, which requires you to make some alterations (and there are no concave mouths yet, so Earl's outta luck.)

On the other hand, it is insanely easy to make a whole army of Audrey 2s.
