Pony Poni Poné came in second at the Coolidge Corner Rock Band Battle Of The Bands Thingo. We won I think movie passes and maybe some popcorn and it was pretty cool. The first place band beat us on technical points, but that's not to say we didn't rock.

We ended up playing Dani California as our chosen song, and then the Random Song actually came from a Rock Band 2 playlist. Yeah, they demoed Rock Band 2 for us, and from what the Harmonix guys said, it was pretty much the first time RB2 was shown to the public in a non-press kind of way (they played it at E3, but that's mostly for the press and the trades.) Our random song was Come Out and Play, and we all did pretty damn well for a sight reading, and we bopped around the stage and it was fun.

The other groups ranged from serious technical wizards who blew thru Expert songs like there was no tomorrow (they won the technical award, but there was no showmanship there) to the ridiculous, such as the quartet who called themselves Fuck Mountain and had the t-shirts to prove it. One band, The Devil Wears Nada, was unfortunately waitlisted so we never got to see them on the big screen but you gotta give props to that name anyway. The crowd was all boisterous and cheered everybody on, even the poor group that failed out of their chosen song early on (they should've gotten a second chance when the event switched to Rock Band 2 and activated the No Fail Mode, because that kept a lot of people alive later on, believe you me.)

If you missed it and you had the ability to be there, boy howdy did you miss out. Seeing that game looming 30 feet above you and the sound system just booming is truly an experience, and I enjoyed every head bobbing bass strumming 3D glasses-wearing moment. So there.

Judging from the turnout and the response, the Coolidge seems pretty open to holding more in the future, so Operation Hobo Thunder should definitely not stop believin. We talked with the staff afterwards and they were pretty psyched with the way things turned out, even in the face of some technical problems. They also adapted the rules of the contest pretty quickly when it turned out more bands signed up than they'd expected.

If Orleans is on tonight, at least one half of P³ will be in attendance, and my wrist will have healed nicely too.

The game's not in 3D. I needed the glasses to Complete The Look, see. We heard early on that a prize may be given out to the band who most closely resembled their in-game band, so we made some costumes that we could easily match. I made a guy with a Fantastic Four shirt (he's called Baxter Building) and threw some 3D glasses on as a joke, and then realized I needed some 3D glasses. LeDiva actually put on a purple wig. Emily rocked out jelly bracelets and Dale had her hair up in pigtails.

When we got to the show it turned out that they weren't going to let each band come up, shove their memory cards into the XBox and load their bands (which of course involves everybody signing in to their gamertag, then going "oops wait you're supposed to sign in first" and then screwing about for 10 minutes while you finally work out the band leader and stuff.) It would've taken up too much time and besides, we got to play Rock Band 2, which from what I've heard won't support your Rock Band 1 characters and bands.

However, our costumes weren't entirely in vain because we still wore em, got showmanship points for em, and I wore the glasses anyway because at that point, it was an obligation.

Would've been nice, though, to unlock the "Riding on Coattails" achievement you get when you play with a Harmonix employee.
