The third season of Saturday Night Live is out in a DVD box set and my goal to watch the entire early run continues on apace, which is a good thing. I watched the first three episodes last night (Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn and Hugh Hefner) and will yammer about them later this afternoon, but let me bring about an aura of foreboding by telling you this:

The most disturbing part about SNL's 1977-1978 season was not Hugh Hefner singing "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" during his opening monologue (nor was it Laraine Newman cavorting about as the Femlin during the cold opening.)

Gee. I hope I haven't set the foreboding bar a little too high here.

Femlin? Is that where she would fold her arms behind her head, yet still be flexible enough to reach down the front of her chest?

And wasn't this the season with Milton Berle's disastrous hosting of an episode?

Berle doesn't show up until the fourth season, so I don't get the privilege of that one yet. I am eagerly anticipating it, though, in the next DVD box set (it also features the Frank Zappa episode which earns him a ban, too.)

The Femlin was actually a Playboy feature. She's a tiny impish woman drawn by LeRoy Neiman and usually adorned the Playboy Party Jokes page on the back of each centerfold. The Femlin was always cavorting about or getting into some kind of impish mischief with an everyday object (the iconic image is of the Femlin lounging in a martini glass.) While the Femlin is naked (albeit with black gloves and stockings) the cartoons weren't obscene but instead, well, kinda cute.

I was just reading the wikipedia entries chronicling SNL in 5-year increments. Sounds like you got a rough road ahead.

I just bought a video of the 15th anniversary special which I loved as a 15-year-old, although I know the video is the version that was cut up for rebroadcast and not nearly as good as the original I used to watch until the tape got copied over.
