Earlier today I put some tortilla chips out on the squirrel feeder we've got on the front balcony for His Nibs' amusement. It's a little green plastic bowl twist-tied to a plant rack. Every now and then we put out some stale food out for the squirrels and they come by and Abbie watches the latest episode of Squirrels Eating.

Except now I see that not only did the squirrels eat all the tortilla chips, they broke off and took away half the bowl, too.

Perhaps they think the bowl has the magical power of Summon Tortilla Chips. They didn't want to remove the bowl completely, because it might need to be in that spot for the magic to work, but they wanted to see if they could make the spell function in the privacy of their own nest.

You've created a squirrely cargo cult...

This is exactly what I thought. Except I figured the squirrels were smart, and would assume that dumb human would fill the bowl wherever it was.

They needed something to put the salsa in, clearly.

I laughed so loud at this. Because all I could imagine were squirrels going, "CHIPS!!! D8" and going into a tortilla-fueled frenzy and devouring half of the bowl in their joy. Or breaking it off and carrying it away like a bunch of soccer hooligans.

Ours have eaten through TWO trash cans now.

At first, naturally, we assumed it was a raccoon or a possum or something. Nope. A squirrel. We've watched him do it now.

Tod's been slathering it with hot sauce, which seems to do the trick.
