In honor of the Dreamcast's 10th anniversary yesterday I went down to the basement and hugged my little console, smiled wistfully at the likes of Jet Grind Radio and Shenmue, looked at the little Virtual Memory Unit thingos you could put into your controller and take out to play Tamagotchi-like games if you had Sonic Adventure (and which beep like mad when their batteries are dead and you turn the console on.)

Then I went upstairs to play a rock and roll video game which would have been impossible ten years ago. I miss that little DC like nobody's business, but we've come quite a ways since.

ex had (or maybe still has) a dreamcast and we would play Soul Calibur and keep score. I always won! he tried playing Phantasy Star but that game was meant to be played online and it's such a shame that the dc's online gaming never took off.

Amen. I shall give my DC a (one day late) hug as well, and then go play Soul Calibur 1 on Xbox Live in loving memory.

There are so many happy things wrapped up in this silly little console.

My favorite memory has nothing at all even to do with the console as a gaming device. I went to go see George Clinton and P-Funk out a Brandeis, about six weeks before the much-anticipated launch of the console.. and he came out wearing one as a medallion on a ridiculous big gold-tone chain. With the little triangular light actually lit up.

I keep meaning to buy some more of the accessories. A VMU, a mouse. I still have two controllers and a keyboard and two of the consoles; the holy grail would be a broadband adapter.

The Beatles: Rock Band TV commercial earwormed me with "I Am The Walrus" for quite a while.

I am officially un-embalming my DC and enshrining it as a permanent addition to my computer desk as soon as I get my new PC, new monitor, and a VGA box so's I can hook it up.

Modern technology is nice but sometimes you just gotta play Rez 'til your eyeballs bleed.

o i wish o i wish i could use our dreamcast keyboard to surf via the xbox. We plugged the Dreamcast into the modem in 2002 - quite the broken-link slow-motion adventure!
