Sep. 10th, 2009 09:37 amIn honor of the Dreamcast's 10th anniversary yesterday I went down to the basement and hugged my little console, smiled wistfully at the likes of Jet Grind Radio and Shenmue, looked at the little Virtual Memory Unit thingos you could put into your controller and take out to play Tamagotchi-like games if you had Sonic Adventure (and which beep like mad when their batteries are dead and you turn the console on.)
Then I went upstairs to play a rock and roll video game which would have been impossible ten years ago. I miss that little DC like nobody's business, but we've come quite a ways since.

I went to go see George Clinton and P-Funk out a Brandeis, about six weeks before the much-anticipated launch of the console.. and he came out wearing one as a medallion on a ridiculous big gold-tone chain. With the little triangular light actually lit up.
I keep meaning to buy some more of the accessories. A VMU, a mouse. I still have two controllers and a keyboard and two of the consoles; the holy grail would be a broadband adapter.

Date: 2009-09-19 05:59 am (UTC)Goddammit I had one on order from the Sega Store online but then they had to cancel it because, well, stock was depleted.
(Other than that, the Sega Store's online presence was really cool for 1999-2000 standards and once they sent me this big Sonic stuffed animal for being so nice and ordering games from them. I had to; no place around sold them!)
So instead I ran a phone cord from the DC to my gateway, ran pppd on that bad boy, and "dialed in" to access online play through my broadband connection. Best. Kludge. Ever.
Well, by "online play" I mean uploading J.R. "Bob" Dobbs and 12 Monkeys spray tags for me to use in Jet Grind Radio and also using the browser to post to a favorite web board. It was slow going without the keyboard attachment. I believe the entire message was "Hi there! I'm posting this from my Dreamcast just because I can. Well, this message just took 20 minutes to write. Bye!"
Never ventured into the online component of PSO just cause.

But yeah, I totally know what you mean about playing til the eyeballs fall out.
