(Update: You can view a larger version of the picture and order prints at http://cambooth.net/interstatemap/. It is quite nifty!)

I want this on a huge print and I want it now:

The Eisenhower Interstate Highway System in the style of H.C. Beck's iconic London Underground map. Whoo doggies is it a nice'un. State highways and three-digit routes are not included, which is why cities like Pittsburgh aren't represented (I-79 runs thru Pittsburgh, but it intersects with I-76 well north of the city.)

But just LOOK at it! Dear God, just LOOK! That's cool!

It's fascinating to see the changes of density between the East Coast/Midwest and the West Coast/Rockies. (The Density Disparity?) It's no surprise at all, but fascinating. Somehow the way it's presented as simply as it on this map turns out to be really effective.

That's fantastic.

I'm reminded of "You know you're from Ohio...when you have to drive on the Interstate every time you go out to buy milk"

Wow, that's great. And really easy to follow, but that's the genius of the Beck layout for you.

Have you seen that we have a similar thing for buses now? Not the whole system, but a different spider map (http://greatergreaterwashington.org/post.cgi?id=3434) for each stop showing the complete routes of nearby buses. Works really well, plus "spider map" is a cool-sounding name.

@Derspatchel: want a print? Visit: http://cambooth.net/interstatemap/

@preysz: This isn't the real railway network as a subway map, but this is:

Both all my own work.

That Amtrak map is pretty awesome.

I guess what I actually meant to say was "if only our national passenger rail system was as extensive, cheap, and easy to use as our interstate highway system."
