Tracy apparently took my cockatoo lamp as a trashpicking challenge and came up with a real topper. Here we see the +12 Sword of Dood on the coffee table next to the house golden apple, which gee_tar bequeathed to us when he moved out.


It has a very ornate hilt and a knob on the end so you can snicker all you want about it.


And a little catch on the hilt unsheathes the mighty SOMETHINGCALIBUR


Local law says it's legal for us to own the sword but not carry or conceal it. This means you won't get any pictures of me trying to awkwardly hide it under a windbreaker, nor of Abbie's knighting. ARISE, SIR ABBIE THE MIGHTY HUNTER, KNIGHT OF THE PEOPLE FOOD TABLE AND GUARDIAN OF THE ORDER OF THE JINGLY COLLAR

I believe the proper term for the knob is "pommel," although admittedly that doesn't lend itself to as much snickering.

I was aware that wizards' staves have knobs on the end, but I didn't know if this also applied to swords. For the sake of the snicker, I want to believe!

If you want to snicker at a proper term for weaponry, try image-searching 'bollock dagger', a design which takes the knob part very literally indeed.

One Christmas, my brother bought be a book called The Complete History of Knives, Daggers, and Bayonets. I recall seeing several very... educational examples of a bollock dagger.

My daughter has started watching Fraggle Rock episodes on DVD. Her name is Marjorie and we've hastened to explain that this is a coincidence (Sam had watched the show as a kid but had forgotten the trash heap had a name).

Heh. Maybe this will help: it would appear that the proper spelling of the trash heap's name is actually with a "Y" on the end rather than an "IE". (Yes, I looked it up after seeing your comment.)

I also didn't remember the names of her two, um, whatever they were. "Philo" and "Gunge". [giggling]
