So as many of you know, my "day job" (I must have one, cause folks keep telling me not to quit it) involves dispatching roadside assistance calls to people what needs em. No, it's not AAA. I get calls from lots of people all over the US. Most people are nice. Some people are jerks. Today I got someone famous. I got to help Joan Osborne out.

Now I didn't get all fanboy. I didn't even mention it, cause honestly, I didn't think it would be very professional to. I kinda figured it was her because her vehicle was registered under the name of her record label (I googled it out of curiosity after the call to confirm it.) I just provided her the same service I'd provide anyone else, because it's probably that's what she wanted. Otherwise she wouldn't have called.

Anyway, it was a nice little pleasant diversion. She was really cool and quite nice (with a wonderful phone voice, but I guess that's to be expected as she's got a great singing voice -- and if you haven't heard any of her stuff other than One Of Us then you really are missing out.) I, of course, was my usual helpful self, and got someone out to help with her vehicle problems. Later on I talked with some other cow orkers about celebrity calls -- apparently Aaron Spelling is a miserable SOB but Ben Affleck was pretty cool.

And because I forgot this morning, here is your abstract for today.

What if God was one of us?
Just a stranger on the phone,
trying to arrange a tow.
Back to my condo all alone.
No body callin' on the phone.
'Cause my hits stopped sellin' long ago.

My husband met Sinbad at ASU when his daughter was moving into the dorms last year. Oddly enough, he was *not* wearing the baggy florescent pants that were his oh-so-stylish trademark in the early 90's. Pity.

I used to work for an answering service, one of our crummiest clients was the horrible cable company that turned their phones over to us at night. Since this cable company served a large chunk of Los Angeles, I used to get calls from all kinds of celebs. Most of them were actually quite cool considering that they usually had a valid complaint about their cable service. The only person I specifically recall as being a jerk was, of all people, Steve Kmetko. Yep, the guy from E!. He used to call once or twice a week and yell at us for 10, 15 minutes at a time about how important it was that he be able to see his cable, this is what he did for a living, etcetera etcetera. I think it might have been therapy for him.

Joan Osborne is a capital G Goddess. I'm rather jealous of you now.

If you've never seen "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", find it. There's a short segment with a couple of the Funk Brothers talking with Joan in a diner, discussing how they came up with the riffs for "I Heard it Through the Grapevine", and doing the riffs acapella, and then Joan starts singing the song. It's just a snippet, but it's bone-chillingly good.

I want to hear her do the whole song.

Last time I checked, I thought I was more about the dark blues and bluish-purples than earthtones at night.
