It's a marvelous day at the Porcupine Racetrack! See it before Viacom notices and yanks it from YouTube.

(the video quality is crummy but that's what you get when the only time this was ever released, it was on VHS and it was a long time ago.)

Oh, and there also seems to be a nice copy of The Jew, The Italian and The Redhead Gay as well! Hooray for Viacom not noticing!

My favorite part of this one is the gasping-while-holding at the end.

I'm ashamed to admit I felt a small bit of relief when they yanked "The State". It suggested that some large segment of the MTV market had the same sense of humor I did. That was a disturbing thought at the time. Now it might be worth it if it means a DVD release.

Meanwhile, Spatch, where'd you get the $240 dollars?

I initially wrote The State off because, well, it was MTV, and it was a sketch comedy show, and what did MTV know from comedy after they'd cruelly snuffed The Half Hour Comedy Hour anyway? It took some prodding before I watched it and realized it was pretty darn funny. MTV had a history of taking on unorthodox programming in the late 80s-early 90s (Remote Control, 120 Minutes, Liquid Television, heck, even The Real World was new and unusual at one time) and it was clear The State fell into that crowd rather than with House of Style or MTV Sports (with Dan Cortese! VOOM! Didja see that gondola go by?)

MTV still takes the occasional bizarre program. Wonder Showzen is a fantastic example. That's probably the most viscerally offensive, hateful, and confrontational TV show ever produced. I still find it amazing that it made air.

I remember watching Kids Show, the "underground" pilot for that, and thinking how much lawyer crap those kids' parents must sign so that they won't sue when they proudly watch the show, only to see their kid answering the question "Where do babies come from?" with "Lebanon."
