HELLO MY NAME IS M. NIGHT SHYLAMAN AND MY CHARACTER IN THIS MOVIE HAS WRITTEN THE MOST IMPORTANT THING EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THINGS BEING WRITTEN AND I AM ALSO THE PRETTIEST GIRL IN ALL OF HOGWARTS
OH AND HERE IS A MEAN OLD MOVIE CRITIC CHARACTER WHO GETS IN THE WAY OF EVERYTHING BECAUSE HE THINKS HE KNOWS IT ALL, I SURE HOPE NOTHING BAD OR IRONIC HAPPENS TO HIM
Maybe it was that I was prepared for it, but that particular casting choice bothered me much less than it did most of the critics. Although I would have savaged that plot if it came across my desk as a novel, I found the whole thing kind of charming. It's sort of like the story a bunch of kids making a movie with tape recorders and Dad's super8 camera would come up with...
You're right, the film really did play like a rainy-day imagination game. If things could have stayed at that, I'd have really enjoyed it, but my eyes rolled too far in the back of my head when Mary Sue came out to play (many apologies, plumtreeblossom) and I couldn't get 'em to roll back to normal.

I hope you wrote this with the intent of pointing out that it's how Mr. M. started his love of storytelling and filmmaking. Seriously. Him and some friends making movies with Dad's Super8.
Hmm. I wonder if M. Night could tell the difference between boy cows and girl cows, because the people behind "The Barnyard" sure don't seem to have been able to.
At least ADAPTATION gave the Mary Sue thing a great twist, once Donald got ahold of the screenplay. That was brilliant.
M. Night in LADY is pretty much saying "This is me, and this is the very important shit that I do, and these are all the nasty critics who are mean to me."
