No, "evoo" is just an acronym for extra virgin olive oil, but the reason Ray is so annoying with it, is that, at least every time I've seen her do it, she doesn't just say "evoo", she says "ee-vee-oh-oh-extra-virgin-olive-oil".

Which kind of misses the point of shorthand.

I think "smashed" is a genuine British-ism, though. I heard it used as a synonym for mashed potatoes long before I'd ever heard of Rachael Ray.

I would like to add "BAM" to the list of things that other shows should stop appropriating from the Food Network.

Also, even though I'm a fan of Iron Chef, I'm getting sick of "whose (word that rhymes with cuisine) reigns supreme?"

All I want is for people that know what they are talking about (like Tony Bourdain) and who can say what they are thinking (like Tony Bourdain).

Not on Food Network, but his show "No Reservations" is good - and the episode when they were trapped in Lebanon during unexpected military activities, may be the best hour of TV I can name.

My wife and I watch Food Network so we can learn more about food and cooking. Rachel Ray gives us gas.

I wish Bourdain would stop ragging on vegetarians. I think his idea of a foodie is someone who will eat anything and everything without squick or an ethical dilemma. It's a fun show, but at the same time is disturbingly macho in an "I can crap bigger than you" sort of way.

He once did a show that ran directly from a review of New York, into a show by Andrew Zimmerman. The transition was literally the two of them meeting on a beach in Brooklyn. Bourdain made a few comments about Zimmerman taking it a bit too far, as I recall.

I think a real foodie will try anything. That's what moves them from the category of "like the rest of us".

The Lebanon episode was incredible. The entire No Reservations series is awesome, but that special was an amazing example of what happens when you go in to a place with cameras to get one special view, but end up with a wholly different one.

Bourdain's an unabashed hedonist. I like that. Rachael Ray is just obnoxious. I don't like that.

I'm about to hate myself - join in...

There is a niche role for Rachel Ray, and she fills it well. If Food Network is to have economic appeal and value, it has to be bigger than the foodies, home cooks, pro-cooks and wannabes. It has to bring in folks that don't cook.

Ray (and, to a slightly different, Emeril Live) talk to the folks that find cooking perilous or scary. "Go ahead, it isn't hard, I can show you how." (Plus, if the food-teacher says "buy my orange handled knives from Food Network", they will: BAM!)

That is part of what Food Network has to do. It doesn't mean I like it, or need it, or want it.

Bourdain is what the world needs of few of: A Bon Vivant. Someone that goes to the edge, looking for a great thing, and has an unquenchable need to share it. He is, to folks that care, what Rachel Ray is to those that should care: the impetus to that next, great, step.

In actual fact, he is far better at encouraging that next great step, than Ms Ray can ever hope to be. But he challenges, and that is his virtue, and she doesn't, and that is hers.

I love Food Network for 'Ace of Cakes' and 'Good Eats' alone, and 'Iron Chef' and 'Chopped' are pretty good too. I've been known to watch the Food Network Challenge, also. Hell, it's a pretty good network, but yeah, they need a wider vocab.

I watch if they'd do a show about a food enthusiast from a small, exotic country exploring the cuisine of North America.
